"The Double"
Some time ago we received a letter from an individual, Roger Hall, who we did not know at that time. He wrote to say that he had read Robert's book, "Freeing the Soul from Fear", and one chapter in particular had moved him. He went on to say that a kind of waking dream resulted from reading that chapter and that he was sending the conversation that was the content of that dream. There is the unmistakable quality of authenticity to this imaginal conversation. I wrote Roger and asked if he would allow us to post his letter and the dream conversation as the School's eletter for this month. He cordially gave his permission. Thank you Roger.

Dear Dr.Sardello,
My name is Roger Hall and I 'm writing you to tell you how much I've enjoyed reading your book, "Freeing the Soul from Fear". I have found it very useful in my daily life, and highly recommend it to my friends. However the chapter on The Double has captured my interest intensely. After reading and rereading it, I must tell you that I have come to a much fuller understanding of this Being, so much so that I must send you this short dialogue that was influenced by your book. In the epilogue I explain how the whole process came about.
Again, thank you so much for your book and your dedication to the work you do for humanity. I shall keep good thoughts for you and may God bless you.

THE DOUBLE
A YOUNG MAN: Hey, what's going on here? I must be having a weird dream. Who are you?
EVIL BEING: I am the highest of the Evil Beings. I live in the spirit world, and also in you.
YM: Have I gone mad? I'm talking to a devil or something! What do you look like?
EV: Eons of adverse deeds have given me my appearance. You couldn't stand to look at me, my friend!
YM: Why are you here? Why are you talking to me? And I'm not your friend!
EV: Good questions.... Maybe you are talking to me. It's your dream. Let's make this quick I am a very busy Being these days.
YM: Busy?
EV: Of course. It isn't easy keeping the world in a confusing state. Keeping the religions and leaders of the world under my rule. I love to see people acting so pompous, each religion and race competing against the other. Every government exploiting its people. I 'm enjoying every minute of it!
YM: Boy, you are some wicked Being aren't you? Why are you so hateful?
EV: You arrogant human beings, you think you're so righteous and so clever. Don't you know that "I am" your righteousness, "I am" your cleverness! I live in your emotions; I control your thoughts. I can give you wisdom, courage, insight or anything you want. Do you want to be rich and comfortable? I can even make you loving and kind!
YM: Wait just a minute, sir. I'm not that stupid and I know you're not God....
EV: God! What do you know about God? You only know what you've been told, or what you read in your profound books! You have no direct knowledge of anything like God!
YM: Well then answer me this: The fact that you just acknowledged HIM when you spoke tells me that there is a Higher Power than you!
EV: Of course, you must believe that because you have been carefully taught. Does this Higher Power exist, really?
YM: If you exist, He must also!
EV: Very well, I will admit that another power exists that opposes me, but he is no threat to me because He is your power, not mine. And I, not He, supply you with all the things that are necessary for your existence.
YM: Everything? Just a minute sir, .......
EV: Oh please, you're not going to give me a religious lecture now, are you, son? Because if you are, I'll give one back to you ten times more powerful..... Friend, don't you know by now that I have complete control over you. I know what you're thinking before you say it! Friend, I was born with you and I even know when you're going to die.
YM: Stop calling me friend! I'm not your friend! And you don't know when I will die!! You may know a lot of things, but you don't know when I will die! Besides, who are you? Do you have a name, or do you just call yourself the Evil One?
EV: Oh I have many names, take your pick. You humans made them up. Consult your religious books. I am the Devil, Satan, Mephistopheles, Ahriman, you name it.
YM: Lucifer?
EV: I told you I am all those, with the exception of Lucifer. We are brothers with different goals.
YM: What do you mean brothers with different goals?
EV: Let's just say that he works in another realm.You will encounter him in your spiritual endeavors. I am the one to befriend you in the physical world. Besides I won't reveal all the information to you that is secret. We have our secrets you know!
YM: Yea, I'll bet, dark ones I'm sure.
EV: Let me ask you. Are you not content with all the wonderful worldly marvels that I have given you as you evolved?
All the high tech gadgets and things to make your life more comfortable? I've allowed you humans all the necessary intelligence to create the most wonderful devices to make your lives more pleasant and enjoyable. You should be praising me everyday.
YM: Well, if you gave us all these wonderful things, you must have given us the technology to destroy ourselves with high tech weapons of mass destruction. I'm sure it is you who enjoys seeing us fight each other to the death. It's you who instigates all the insane religious wars, murdering each other on a daily basis!
EV: I'm not the one who is responsible for your religious wars. My name is never mentioned in a religious war. A holy war is fought over your God, not me. And as far as technology, I gave you the gift, what you do with it is up to you. My only concern is that you know the truth!
YM: Truth? I think not! You're the Master of Deception, the King of Liars, The Prince of Darkness!
EV: Hey, hey! Take it easy. You're hurting my feelings here. I'm telling you these things at your request, son. I don't have to be here, you know. I thought we were having a nice chat. Besides, you're reading too many books. You should enjoy life more. Get involved in your sporting events. Enjoy a nice meal and an action packed movie. Wash your car, show it off. There are a million things to be doing to get the most fun out of life.
YM: Well....the more I think about it, you may be right. I really have been under a lot of stress lately. And I sure could use some more fun in my life, lord knows. Hey, I'm sorry about those wise cracks I made about you, and you have been kind enough to talk to me on your time.
EV: Sure, son. You've got to understand something. I exist for all Humankind. I am here to further your evolution. My only purpose is your welfare and future. I've been with you for a long time. I don't want to brag about the gifts I have given you, or the earthly pleasures you enjoy, but they did come from me. And there are a lot more to come.
YM: Okay, with reservation I can understand that, but what about all the grief and sorrow in the world? Aren't you responsible for that too?
EV: Young man, let me tell you something. I've been trying to keep this conversation on a nice simple level. And you immediately want to understand how everything in the world works. Without getting real complicated for you son, let me just say this: There is a reason for everything that happens. You humans will never know most of those reasons. Remember, you have earned your freedom. You asked for it and it was granted. You may now enjoy life without being hampered from above. And as far as grief and sorrow in the world, you blame me, you blame each other, or you blame your God. What difference does it make, get the picture?
YM: Boy, aren't you clever.
YM: We haven't mentioned the opposing Power yet. From our conversation, I have learned that if You exist, He must exist. And if you live in me, like you say, then He must also.
EV: Look son, I've told you that you have your freedom. The only way you're going to figure all this out lies deep within you. I'll give you a hint. Beauty wouldn't be beauty without ugliness. Everything has an opposite and I am no exception. This is why I exist! I've given you logical thinking to use any way you want. God knows I've tried to enlighten you today with what I've told you. But if you insist on thinking of me in a bad light, I will take my leave. One last thing. I said I was the Evil One from the beginning of our conversation, and I am. Now it is up to you and all of mankind to redeem me if you can!
Epilogue
This conversation went on in my head for several mornings as I awoke. It was as if I was listening to it as a third party. As if the characters were using my mind as a discussion room. I've since felt it had been going on while I was asleep and I, myself was the young man. Young, in terms of my knowledge compared to his. I am convinced this being stands between me and my right to understand higher knowledge. If there is a real Being like this that lives in us all, then as he said, we must redeem him. I actually think his last comment was a cry for help. But we must deal with him in ourselves first, because otherwise he will not go away. Only the lack of love and compassion in the world, and in us, allows this adverse Being to exist. That means only through love and understanding can we set this Being, and ourselves, free. By doing so we shall truly redeem him so that he can work for the Higher Power, and for the good of all mankind.
